Magnesium Oil

Magnesium Oil

Every cell in our bodies uses magnesium in some way. A magnesium deficiency can have any number of symptoms, including anxiety, lack of concentration, insomnia, irritability and poor memory.

If you'd like to supplement your diet with magnesium, the best way is with food or a supplement. The following recipe for magnesium oil is a recent "Share", with the suggestion that applying it to your skin provides health and beauty benefits.

This recipe contains magnesium chloride, which has similar properties and applications to Epsom salt, which is magnesium sulfate. Correct me if I'm wrong (Chem 101 was a long time ago!), but sulfates are organic compounds while chlorides exist as organic and inorganic compounds. This would be why many consider the latter to be more natural and thus superior to traditional Epson salt.

I haven't figured out the "oil" part of magnesium oil. I look at it as more a saturated solution of magnesium chloride and water. The magnesium probably would give it a slippery feel, without leaving an oily residue.

If you're interested in making this, my main recommendation would be to be sure to use distilled water to extend the shelf life of the mixture.

You will need:
1/2 cup Magnesium Chloride Flakes
1/2 cup distilled water
A glass bowl or glass measuring cup
A glass or plastic spray bottle

Instructions:
Boil the distilled water. Put the Magnesium Chloride Flakes in the bowl or measuring cup and the pour the boiling water over them.

Stir well until completely dissolved. Let cool completely and store in the spray bottle. Can be stored at room temperature for at least six months.

To use, spray the solution on your arms, legs and stomach daily. The recommendation I've heard is 10-20 sprays per day. People say that it will tingle on your skin the first few times it is used, and that this is normal. The tingling should fade after a few applications, but you can dilute the mixture with more distilled water if it bothers you.

You can leave the solution on your skin or wash it off after 20-30 minutes. Consider applying it after a shower and then using coconut to moisturize about 5 minutes later.

Proponents of magnesium oil like it because of its convenience - you don't need to soak in a salt bath, you can just use the magnesium oil on a patch of dry skin. Let me know your thoughts on this or how it works for you!
